About Us

History and Current Statistics
The school district began in 1882 and included the community schools of Biry, Blackcreek, BigFoot, and Shookville, prior to consolidation. Presently, the district covers an area of 237 square miles and has an enrollment of approximately 1,929 students, housed on four campuses.

An elected Board of seven trustees governs the Devine Independent School District, and DISD is the largest employer in the city of Devine. The school district is located 32 miles south of San Antonio, Texas in the southeastern tip of Medina County and encompasses the city of Devine, which includes 192 square miles and an estimated population of 4,350. The District and the city of Devine are governed independently with each having individual taxing authority. The nearest large city is San Antonio, which provides employment for some of our more mobile residents. However, our geographical location on the poorest side of San Antonio restricts opportunities for many residents and our school children as well as limits business infrastructure in Devine, thus reducing our tax base and employment opportunities.

Devine ISD serves approximately 1,900 students on four campuses. Our district includes 1 elementary campus (EE-grade2), 1 intermediate campus (Grades 3-5), 1 middle school (Grades 6-8), and 1 high school campus (Grades 9-12). Additionally, DISD provides AEP services at our own DAEP.

Average Class Size:
Elementary 14.5 students per teacher
Intermediate 15.4 students per teacher
Middle School 13.7 students per teacher
High School 12.7 students per teacher

Devine ISD provides a learning environment that ensures quality education. The district balances dynamic curriculum and cooperative partnership with parents and community, prepares students for changes and challenges of the future and empowers them to pursue productive and fulfilling lives. Our district goal is to reach "TEA Exemplary" rating. During the past few years, we received TEA Gold Acknowledgement Awards for outstanding performance on the TAKS Tests in a number of areas. Devine ISD received a number of Gold Acknowledgment Awards for 20% or more students scoring “Commended” on the TAKS Test. Additional Awards included: a 96% Attendance Award for Devine Middle School and the Gold Performance Acknowledgement Award for having 60% or more graduates on the Recommended High School Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program at Devine High School.

All DISD buildings are connected via high speed fiber; the fiber supports data, telco, video surveillance, video broadcasting, and HVAC controls.  The district recently completed a wireless project that added 170 access points to our network, giving us 100% coverage.  Also, recently completed is a video broadcasting system that can broadcast district-wide.  The high school has 10 computer labs, one consisting of a mobile cart with laptops.  The middle school has 4 computer labs.  The elementary school (K-2) and the intermediate school (3-5) both have two computer labs.  The two primary campuses can support up to 6 network devices per classroom, the secondary campuses can support 3 to 6 depending on classroom age.
