DMS COUNSELOR NEWS
by Dawn Schneider
Hello and Welcome Back to another school year at Devine Middle School.
We have a lot going on this year with the construction of our new wing.
We are all very excited and can’t wait to see the progress on
the addition.
Part of the “Back to School” routine involves getting back
in the habits of setting aside time for homework each day. Many students
and families are so busy with after-school activities, that it is essential
to have a homework plan. Depending on the family schedule, is it best
for your student to do their homework immediately when arrive home?
Or do you set aside time as soon as the table is cleared after dinner?
How much homework does your student typically have? Be sure there enough
time in the schedule to get it done. Is there a set place in the house
for homework? These are just a few of the many questions you need to
think about when creating a time and place for your child to complete
their homework or study for exams.

link on the district website. The link for EdHelpForParents.com has
a ton of great information for parents regarding Homework Help, Discipline
and Behavior, Extracurricular Activities and Educational Family Fun.
The Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) is once again
looking for talented students. The goal of the Duke TIP is to assist
students with excellent mathematical or verbal aptitude. Students are
provided with information about their abilities and introduced to a
network of services and programs. The 7th Grade Talent Search identifies
academically talented 7th graders based on standardized test scores
achieved while attending intermediate or middle school. The students
qualifying for this opportunity will be eligible to take above level
test such as the ACT or SAT. After taking the test, students will receive
a Results Summary which provides suggestions for academic development
based on performance. Congratulations to this year’s Talent Search
Qualifiers.
