DMS COUNSELOR NEWS
by Dawn Schneider
It is hard to believe that it is the middle of November already. Our middle school volleyball, cross country, and football seasons have ended quite successfully, and basketball practice is just around the corner. Students are gearing up for UIL academic competition next month. The third six weeks began this week and students have been busy with benchmark testing. This week we are busy preparing for our Veteran's Day Program on Friday. All veterans and active service members are invited to attend. Please call the school office for more information.
At school we often see a drop in both attendance and grades at this time of year. Parents can help their students maintain a strong academic focus by checking their homework and keeping in contact with their child's teachers. Encourage good attendance, and always be sure to remind your child to ask for make-up work if he/she must be absent. Attendance is often a struggle during this time of year.
As part of our Red Ribbon Week Celebration, students worked for 3 days during Pride setting their sights on their future. On the first day, students set goals for themselves for today and where they want to be one day. They worked to identify their strengths and challenges and how they wanted to work to improve. The next day, students chose a profession and wrote about how using drugs/alcohol or engaging in violent behavior could get in the way of the goals they set for themselves. At the end of the week, students completed an interest inventory creating am interest profile regarding their future profession. I will be spending time with each pride class over the next several weeks reviewing their profiles and giving students more information. Students will bring home their Interest Profile once I have met with their class. We will be looking at student goals and the training/education required to meet their goals.
If you have driven past our campus in the past few days you have seen that our new wing has exterior walls. It is so exciting to see progress on the new classrooms. If you
