October 2009 What!? Half of the first semester of the 2009-2010 school year has passed us by already!? Since my last newspaper article, our football team has played 4 more football games, our volleyball team is preparing for the playoffs, our cross-country teams are at meets, and our band has been to the regional band contest. Various other activities have occurred such as, the Blood Drive, TAKS retesting, Rachel’s Challenge presentation, TAKS field testing, report card night, a U.T.S.A campus visit, some college’s representatives have visited with our students, Red Ribbon Week, and two colleges fairs that our seniors were invited to attend at Hondo and Lytle High Schools. On Monday October 19 I made a presentation to our school board that included information on past, present, and future counselor activities. I also mentioned that I would start making classroom visitations during the school day in November and that I would post information on a bulletin board calendar across from Mrs. Crain’s classroom. Devine High School will host its career day fair on November 30 at 7:00 p.m. This is also the same day that the school will recognize its students for last year’s TAKS efforts. The TAKS test recognition night will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. On November 24th, the Blue Bell Ice Cream Company will present everyone at the school with ice cream in tribute to the school’s recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School. On November 19th Congressman Ciro D. Rodriguez was on campus to read a National Blue Ribbon Proclamation to our students and staff. Congressman Rodriguez also presented our principal, Mr. Michael Lawson, a United States flag that had been flown over our nation’s capitol. Seniors and juniors have 5 more opportunities to register for the SAT exam and only 4 more opportunities to register for the ACT exam. Our junior and senior students need to use their 2 college days to visit the college/university that they plan to attend in the future. Going to the college fair during the school day with a school sponsored activity does not count as a college day. As I have stated in the past, parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teachers, especially if they are not doing well. It is the policy of the school, that parents/guardians must meet with their child’s teacher(s) as part of the educational process. Roland Cadena |
